QAR Strategies

Systemic practices play a major role in increasing consistency from room to room and directly impacts student achievement.  One way to create a common vernacular throughout the building is through Question-Answer-Relationship, or QAR, Strategies.  This begins with explicitly letting students know that our questions come from two places: In the Book or In Your HeadIn the book questions come from Level 1 of Bloom’s Taxonomy and typically deal with recall strategies (requiring students to reread, locate, etc.).  In your head questions come from Level 2 of Bloom’s Taxonomy and require students to synthesize and infer.  You can create a culture that supports this talk by explicitly telling students “this is an in the book/in your head question.”  After the talk is modeled, we can require students to decide on their own when they are presented with a question.
